What labor rate should I use on my estimates?

The right labor rate depends on whether you do the work yourself or have a team.

You're an owner/operator

Build your estimates with your charge rate. As an example, the rate goes in the Unit Cost of a Labor row, with the hours as the quantity.

You have a team

Use a blended rate, or use each person's charge rate based on the task. As an example, if a lead and a carpenter frame together, add two separate cost item rows, one for each charge rate.

If you use a blended rate

Make sure it's high enough to give you a good margin on your top-paid employees.
