Add Tax to an Expense

Each expense has a Tax box and a Tax $ amount. Buildwise fills in the tax for you, and you can change the amount to match the receipt.

Turn on tax

1

Open the Expenses tab

Go to Expenses in the left menu, or the Expenses tab on a project.

2

Check the Tax box

On the expense row, check Tax. Buildwise fills in Tax $ using the project's tax rate. As an example, a $250.00 expense on a project with a 13% tax rate shows $32.50 in Tax $, and the Total $ is $282.50.

Change the tax amount

Use this when the tax on the receipt doesn't match what Buildwise worked out.

1

Click the Tax $ amount

On the expense row, click the Tax $ amount. It turns into a box you can type in.

2

Type the amount and press Enter

Type the tax from the receipt and press Enter. The Total $ updates. As an example, typing 30.00 changes the Total $ from $282.50 to $280.00.

Your amount stays put

Once you type a tax amount, Buildwise keeps it, even if you change the cost later. To go back to the project's tax rate, uncheck Tax and check it again.

Set tax in the expense window

Click the Files icon on the expense row to open the Expense / Transaction window. Check Tax and type the Tax $ amount there, then click Save.

Match the receipt

Set the tax to match what the receipt or invoice shows. If the receipt has no tax on it, leave Tax unchecked.

The project's tax rate is set on its Overview tab. See Create a Project. In a multi-tax account, see Add Tax to an Expense in a Multi-Tax Account.
