Create a Change Order

Overview

The Buildwise Change Order Builder allows you to create a new change order from scratch or copy an existing change order from another project. After you create your change order, you will Add Costs.

  • You can create multiple change orders for a project. 
  • You can have unlimited approved change orders for a project.
  • You can also update a change order at any time while it is in Draft status.

In this article, we’ll cover how to build a new change order or copy an existing change order from another project.

Create a New Change Order

There are several ways to initiate the process of creating a new change order, either from the Project Change Orders dashboard or the Change Orders.

Project Change Orders Dashboard

On the Project page, click the Change Orders tab. The Project Change Orders dashboard displays.

Click Add. The Add New Change Order popup opens.

The Change Order Name is auto-populated. You can change the name, if needed. Example: 123 Albany - Change Order 1.

The Change Order Name auto-populates with “Change Order #[x]”; the number increases based on the number of change orders within the project. 

Click Add

  • The project change order builder displays in Draft status.
  • To Copy From an existing change order, refer to the Copy a Change Order section below. 

Next, you will add costs to the change order.

Change Orders Dashboard

There are two ways to create a change order from the Change Orders dashboard.

In the left sidebar, click Create New > Change Order, or

In the left sidebar, click Change Orders > Add.

The Add New Change Order popup opens in the Change Orders dashboard.

The Change Order Name is auto-populated. You can change the name if needed. When you create a change order from the Change Orders dashboard, the Change Order Name auto-populates with “Change Order #[x]” based on the number of all change orders within Buildwise.

  • When you select the Change Order Project, the number re-populates based on the number of change orders in the project. 

Select the Change Order Project where you want to save the change order. 

Click Add

  • The project Change Order Builder displays in Draft status.
  • To Copy From an existing change order, refer to the Copy a Change Order section below. 

Next, you will add costs to the change order.

Copy an Existing Change Order

Copying an existing change order is especially helpful when creating new change orders similar to ones you’ve already done. 

Notes

  • You must have at least one change order already in the system to use this functionality.
  • When you copy a change order from another project, the cost groups, cost sections, and cost items will all appear in the destination change order. 
  • All of the project mark-ups will be updated to the destination projects mark-up settings in Project Overview. For more on how to set mark-ups in the Project Overview, refer to the article Set Up Markup Costs.
  • You can copy a fixed cost change order into a cost-plus project and vice versa. 

In the Add New Change Order popup, click Copy From

The Create Change Order From popup opens.

The Change Order Name is auto-populated. You can change the name if needed.

  • When you create a change order from the Change Orders dashboard, the Change Order Name auto-populates with “Change Order #[x]” based on the number of change orders within Buildwise.
  • When you select the Change Order Project, the number re-populates based on the number of change orders in the destination project. 

In the Source Project dropdown, select the project where the change order you want to copy is saved.

In the Source Order dropdown, select the change order you want to copy. 

In the Change Order Project dropdown, select the project destination for the change order. 

Click Create. The project Change Order Builder displays the copied change order in Draft status.

Review the copied change order and Add or Update Costs as needed.
